Laura King, in addition to being a horse nut is also a Certified Hypnotist and Sports Hypnotherapist. This is the first in what Hypnotist Laura King hopes will be a long-running hypnosis column right here on the best horse site around, Towerheads.com, in which she'll give you the mental edge, via self hypnosis, that can be your ticket to the winner’s circle.
In her private practice and through Laura King's CD hypnosis and MP3 hypnotherapy sessions, she aids people with everything from weight loss to stop smoking to improving test scores or overcoming a fear of flying all with self hypnosis therapy. All of this is very rewarding for her, but what Laura King is truly passionate about is boosting equestrians perform at the highest potential as riders and athletes.
The way Laura King does this is quite a bit different, probably, than what you are used to. Laura King won't give you tips on form or technique or strategy, because you already know all of that. Her job is to assist you in relaxing using self hypnosis. To boost your ability to block out distractions. To empower you to become more confident. Once you are able to accomplish these things, success comes naturally to you.
Sports hypnosis is based on a few very simple ideas:
What you think is what you become.
Peak performance is achieved through relaxation.
Visualization (or, mental imagery) is key to success.
Hypnotist Laura King shall expand on these ideas at length in future hypnotherapy columns. For now, Laura King would like to share with you a brief explanation of how hypnosis works because, although she can’t hypnotize you with her writing, she'll be teaching you how to use certain self-hypnosis techniques to achieve your goals.
First off, all great athletes practice some form of self-hypnosis. If that shocks you, consider that self-hypnosis can be nothing more than visualizing a performance in your mind before you begin.
A perfect example is the preparation that goes into a figure skating routine. World-class skaters must mentally rehearse routines thousands upon thousands of times until they are at the point where, once on the ice, every movement comes naturally, without thinking. This is a form of self hypnosis.
By mentally rehearsing routines, the skaters “program” each movement they'll make into their subconscious minds.
When explained that way, there’s certainly nothing mysterious or scary about hypnosis, right? Well, because of how hypnosis treatments have always been portrayed in the media, most people can’t help but feel reluctant to try anything that involves hypnosis techniques or advanced hypnotherapy treatments in any way.
Here’s an explanation of how hypnosis works, taken from my website:
To understand how self hypnosis works, we must first learn about how our mind works. In simple terms, our mind consists of two components: The conscious mind, and the subconscious mind. Our conscious, or logical, mind performs analytical duties, rationalizes, uses will-power in attempts to change personal habits, and serves as our short-term memory.
The conscious mind also contains what is known as the critical factor, which operates automatically when you are using your conscious mind. The critical factor can be thought of as protecting the status quo of your beliefs and must be bypassed in order for you to accept any suggestion that conflicts with your existing beliefs.
On the other hand, our subconscious mind is where our brain deals with habits, emotions, long-term memory, and self-preservation. It is the part of the mind that the self hypnosis acts on, and the part through which it is possible to bypass the critical factor entirely in order to open the door to positive change in your life.
A good metaphor is to refer to the subconscious as your hard drive, as in a computer, and to the hypnotherapy as a re-programmer. When you have targeted a specific glitch, such as a bad habit, in your programming, the hypnotist is able to guide you into a relaxed yet aware state in which it is possible to reprogram your subconscious with positive suggestions that replace negative elements (hypnotherapy).
Our conscious mind finds it difficult to change bad habits. For example, when a person decides to try and stop smoking, they typically think it can accomplished through willpower alone. However, a hypnosis student of the mind knows that willpower simply initiates the desire to change, and is usually unsuccessful at eliminating the problem. The subconscious mind, however, is able to change bad habits by readily accepting positive suggestions.
Therein lies the secret to the effectiveness of self hypnosis: Through positive suggestion, self hypnosis changes your beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors which you would like to improve.
